Facts of Lice

Head lice can cause itching and scratching especially on areas of the body with hair. They particularly love the scalp, behind the ears and the nape of the neck, however, lice and nits can be found anywhere on the head.

You can often see the head lice eggs, commonly referred to as nits on the hair shaft. They look like tiny white little grains of sand and can often be mistaken for dandruff. Your lice removal includes one free final intensive head lice check 7-9 days later.

The difference between dandruff and head lice eggs is dandruff flakes off, whereas nits literally stick to the hair shaft and will not move if you blow on them. When checking a head, chances are you will not see the lice because they are very fast moving. We are capable of searching out and detecting head lice and we offer the best lice treatment available. Nits however are visible, and that is what you should be looking for to determine if you have an infestation. We recommend a wet head lice check to accurately determine if you have head lice.

Symptoms

Head lice are tiny little wingless parasites that crawl very quickly. They are only about 2mm-4mm in size. Head lice are not able to fly, hop or jump from person to person.

Head lice are blood-sucking parasites. They need a human host to survive. Once off of their human host, they will only survive for 24-48 hours. Head lice do not live on your furniture, your bedding or clothing for extended periods of time, but they can survive there for a day or two.

People get head lice from close human contact and from sharing personal items with an infected person.

Nits are not contagious. Nits can only be laid by lice.

Head lice do not survive on the family dog or cat.

Lice bites may cause itching and inflammation and can become infected if not treated.

You must use head lice removal. They will not just "go away" one day like a cold or flu. Lice nit removal can be done in our Portland lice clinic or one of our many Seattle lice clinics.

Drugstore brand head lice treatments do not work in the fight against lice. Not only are they full of pesticides which you are putting on your head, but the head lice have become immune to these toxic treatments.
